FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Masters Swimming?
Masters Swimming is an adult swim program for swimmers ages 18 and older. Our coached workouts are designed for a wide range of abilities, from former competitive swimmers and triathletes to fitness swimmers looking for a low-impact, full-body workout.

Who can join the SCSC Masters Team?
Any adult age 18 or older can join. You do not need previous competitive swimming experience. Our members include fitness swimmers, triathletes, former high school and college swimmers, and adults returning to the sport after many years away.

Do I need to be a fast swimmer to join?​
No. SCSC Masters welcomes swimmers of various ability levels. You should be comfortable swimming at least one length of the pool independently, but we offer workouts for all experience and fitness levels.

Where does SCSC Masters practice?
Practices are held in Papillion, NE at Papillion La Vista High School year-round, and at Papio Bay during for summer morning practices.

When are SCSC Masters practices?
The current practice schedule can be found here. We offer multiple practices each week.

Can beginners join Masters Swimming?
Yes. While Masters Swimming is not a learn-to-swim program, adults who can swim basic freestyle and are comfortable in deep water are welcome. Our coaches can provide modifications and guidance to help newer swimmers improve their technique and endurance.

Is SCSC Masters a competitive swim team?
It can be if you want it to be! Some members compete in local, regional, and national Masters Swimming meets, while others participate strictly for fitness, health, and enjoyment.

Do I have to compete in swim meets?
No. Competition is completely optional. Many members never compete and simply attend practices for exercise, stress relief, and community. The SCSC Masters host home meets throughout the year, and for those not competing, we appreciate your help with timing and volunteering.

Is Masters Swimming good exercise?
Yes. Swimming is a low-impact, full-body workout that improves cardiovascular fitness, strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall health while being easy on the joints.

How much does SCSC Masters cost?
Current rates can be found on our dues page. In addition to monthly practice dues, additional fees include an annual USMS membership fee, SCSC registration fee, and pool rental fees as needed.

Do I need a USA Swimming (USAS) or US Masters Swimming (USMS) Membership?
You will need a US Masters Swimming annual membership.

What equipment do I need?
Most swimmers need: swimsuit, goggles, swim cap, water bottle, and towel. SCSC provides most other training equipment such as fins, paddles, snorkels, and kickboards.

Can triathletes join SCSC Masters?
Absolutely. Many triathletes join Masters Swimming to improve swim technique, efficiency, endurance, and open-water confidence.
